In todays society hot water with lemon juice has made it’s way into the forefront of our daily lives from housewives to health fanatics, weight watchers and fitness guru’s, all battling to rid their bodies from the daily onslaught and build up of chemicals and toxins that comes from living in today’s polluted world.lemonwater
Many of us are also aware of the countless health benefits lemons harbour, such as their strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune boosting powers, plus their use as a weight loss accelerator, because lemon juice is also an excellent digestive aid and liver cleanser.

Lemons are know to contain citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene which in turn promote a stronger immune system and aid in fighting against infection, besides being responsible for making our digestive systems function smoothly and at full steam.

THE PERFECT BREW

To make the perfect lemon water for optimum health benefits, you should begin by using filtered or purified water which should always be lukewarm not scalding hot, as pouring boiling hot water directly onto fresh lemon juice will slowly begin to kill the vitamin C.

Avoid making your lemon with ice cold water as first thing on a morning and last thing at night this can be a lot for your body to process. Always use fresh lemons, preferably chemical free or organic if possible, to avoid any nasty chemicals from contaminating your drink, if not please ensure the lemons have been washed thoroughly.

Don’t use bottled or squeezy lemon juice as it does not hold the same amount of vitamin C levels.

Begin by squeezing 1/2 a lemon into a glass, add the cold water first, then slowly top up with hot water until the solution is at blood temperature. Now for the all important and most often-overlooked ingredient that provides you with the maximum health benefits: Yes thats it: You need to add lemon zest!

Lemon zest contains flavonoids, which is where the lemons detox powers and properties hail from.
So now you have the secret formula, the next time you whip up a glass of this magic potion don’t forget to ensure you grate at least half a teaspoon of lemon zest into the water, along with the lemon juice to ensure that you are reaping the full benefits from your daily brew.

The best time to enjoy your lemon water is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and last thing at night before retiring to bed.

For an added boost trying adding freshly grated ginger, turmeric or cayenne pepper.

This simple super smoothie will have you buzzing and out of the door in no time at all. It’s fast, delicious, nutritious and will get you through the morning without the dreaded grumbling tum!

Cup of unsweetened almond milk
A handful of strawberries and raspberries
1 banana
A handful of oats
Pinch of Himalayan sea salt
1/2 spoon cinnamon powder

Method

Blend all of the ingredients together in a blender..drink, enjoy and go !!!

Sleepy Snoozy Smoothie

If you are struggling nodding off, try this

wonderful Sleepy night, night smoothie, crammed with
an abundance of natural calming properties,
to aid a deep, peaceful sleep..Sweet dreams everyone!

INGREDIENTS

A handful (approx.15-20) organic/chemical free
frozen or fresh pitted cherries
1 small banana
1 kiwi fruit
1/2 cup brewed, chilled camomile tea
1/2 cup almond milk
1/2 avocado
1 teaspoons chia seeds 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup

METHOD

Brew the camomile tea and add turmeric, cinnamon, and nutmeg, leave to steep for 5 mins and cool, before adding all of the ingredients into a blender, blend and serve. Drink slowly 1 hour before bed. Goodnight. ZZZZZZzzzz

Green Goddess Smoothie

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK!

One of my all time favourites, “The Green Smoothie”!

There are many variations of this smoothie but this is my go to recipe. Full of goodness, green smoothies are a delectable way to enjoy your greens, whilst hydrating the body and taking in maximum nutrition from the high doses of naturaly occurring magnesium, calcium, vitamin c, and antioxidants, not to mention the cartenoids and foliate that help to protect the body against disease and degeneration.

So get blending and whizz up this delicious nutritious smoothie for a welcome brekky pick me up. Your body will thank you!

INGREDIENTS

1 cup chilled green tea
1 cup fresh mint leaves
1 cup organic baby kale or spinach
1 cup cucumber, chopped
1 apple, cored and chopped
1 cup pineapple cut into chunks
juice of 1 lemon
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
½ avocado
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon turmeric

METHOD

Add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend on high until super smooth.

Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately! This makes enough for a large glass with some leftover, so you can also divide it into two servings and save one for later. Make sure you put the left over smoothie in a glass airtight container and store in the fridge. The smoothie will stay fresh this way for up to 3 days. Enjoy!

Sunrise Smoothie

8 large strawberries
1 cup seeded watermelon
1 cup chopped peaches or apricots
1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
juice of half a lemon

Blitz all ingredients together in a blender and enjoy !!

BERRY BLAST BREKKY SMOOTHIE

A great start to the day, full of antioxidants and nutrients besides being totally delicious.

Serves 2

Ingredients

1 cup baby spinach leaves
Handful of mint leaves
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup frozen blackberries
1 ripe banana
1/2 cup almond or coconut milk
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Method

Combine all ingredients in a high powered blender, blitz and enjoy!!
