Clean Fifteen™ and Dirty Dozen 2023

Have you heard of the Clean Fifteen™ and Dirty Dozen? The @environmentalworkinggroup’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ is updated every year since 2004 and ranks the pesticide contamination of 46 popular fruits and vegetables. You can enter your location and email address to get a downloadable version of the Clean Fifteen™ and Dirty Dozen™ lists on their website to help you reduce exposures to toxic pesticides.

Pesticides – are they safe?

Most pet-care products, pest control sprays, insecticides, fungicides, pesticides and herbicides are especially dangerous. These formulas contain powerful, active ingredients designed to kill their intended targets quickly.

Not only do these deadly concoctions terminate a variety of pests, but they also wipe out harmless, beneficial insects that naturally control these unwanted nuisances in the first place. If a formulation is highly poisonous and lethal to pests and insects, it is likely to have repercussions over time on the overall health of humankind, our pets and the planet.

Substantial human exposure to these deadly formulas is easy, as they are readily absorbed on contact with our skin and when inhaled thus posing a serious threat to our wellbeing.

Conventional pesticides and chemical treatments have been proved to cause headaches, excess salivation, muscle twitching, nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting seizures, loss of consciousness and may even be responsible for cancer, nervous system poisoning and other fatal diseases.

To reduce our risk to these products, it is crucial that we switch to chemical-free, environmentally friendly alternatives. You can rid your homes and gardens of unwanted pests and insects through the use of essential oils and citrus fruits, which is a far safer and more humane way for all concerned.

Take a Break from Screens

From offices to homes, room to room, we are repeatedly bombarded by technology, emitting electronic pollution and radiation. Appliances such as computers, televisions, microwaves and clock radios to commodities, for example, electric blankets, lights, phones and remote controls, resulting in a device being permanently switched on in our home.

Even at low levels, accumulative exposure to these pollutants may pose significant health implications including fatigue, infertility, immune disorders and even cancer.

We can, however, effortlessly reduce our exposure levels by only employing these items as and when we actually need them, and ensuring all lamps, lights and other electrical devices are switched off before going out or to bed. Do not use dimmer switches or touch lamps, as they produce more radiation; stick to conventional lights and lamps and have dimmers removed by a certified electrician.

Do not leave electrical items on standby; always make sure that appliances are turned off at the socket.

There is mounting controversy over the safety of microwave ovens; even so, there is no doubt that they do produce radiation. If you must cook with a microwave oven, never stand directly in front of it while it is cooking, never put your face up to the glass and always keep young children and animals out of the kitchen while it is in use.

Bedrooms are designed for rest, relaxation and sleeping and should be electrical-free zones. Remove computers, televisions and mobile phones from the bedroom and replace electric blankets with thick duvets and electrical clock radios with battery-operated alternatives

Finally, make a concerted effort to limit the use of wireless technology; for instance, mobile phones, iPads and tablets, computers, cordless phones, Bluetooth technology and baby monitors.

How to clean chopping boards

The antibacterial properties of lemon juice stop the growth of germs and microorganisms, and its bleaching agent naturally lifts stains, leaving the board not only clean but sanitised.

Lemon juice is also excellent for removing odours from chopping boards. Juice a lemon after slicing it in half, then massage the cut edges of the juiced lemon all over the cutting board. The board should then be cleaned using lemon juice and a fresh microfiber cloth. Wait until the odours and stains start to diminish before letting the solution settle. The lemon can be applied to stubborn stains and left on overnight before being rinsed off the next morning with warm water.

Vitamin Sea: Why the ocean can make you happier and healthier

Many of us go to the beach to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, but did you know that swimming in the ocean has numerous advantages?

We all know that swimming in the water may enhance our level of fitness, but did you know that it can also strengthen our muscles, improve our general wellbeing, and aid with our immune system, circulation, and skin health?

Immune System
Ever wondered why you can only smell salt as you exit the water because your nose is clear? Well, the saltwater from the ocean contains sodium chloride, which aids in nose clearing, relieves allergies and respiratory problems.

Relaxation and meditation
Everyone is aware of the positive effects exercise has on our mental health, but exercising outside or near the water boosts those advantages. The body can be guided into a calming meditative state that lowers tension by feeling the motion of the water around you and the flow of the currents and waves in the ocean.

General well-being
The magnesium in seawater and sunlight helps to relax muscles, lower stress levels, and treat aches, pains, and tightness in the muscles.

Skin
Magnesium, sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, and sulphate are just a few of the many minerals and skin-beneficial substances that are present in saltwater.

Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine

This is the perfect non-alcoholic Christmas drink, as it can be made well ahead, then brought out of the fridge as guests arrive – or serve it hot for a traditional winter warmer.

  • 2 cups pomegranate juice
  • 2 cups cranberry juice or non alcoholic red wine 750ml bottle
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 cloves
  • 6 blackberries
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 star anise
  • 1 orange sliced
  • brown sugar to taste

Add all ingredients to a large pot and bring to a very low boil on medium-high heat. Turn heat to low and steam for 20-30 minutes. If you’ve got more time you can leave it up to an hour. Strain, or remove orange slices and spices. Pour into a mug and add garnish. If the weather is very hot on Christmas Day, this also works brilliantly poured over ice.

Shop Local, Eat Local, Spend Local and Enjoy Local

JUST A LITTLE REMINDER FOR THIS CHRISTMAS:
Support our local businesses in Australia. Shopping from small towns, regional areas and flood affected communities is also a lot easier these days thanks to the creation of online stores focused on those regions. Of course you can’t buy everything BUT you can also offer support to local businesses simply by recommending them, sharing their social media posts, writing reviews when you’ve purchased from them, commenting on their posts and generally helping them to reach a greater audience through you. This costs you nothing but time.
